AL LATHIQIYEH (LATAKIA)
Al Lathiqiyeh is Syria's major sea port on the Mediterranean. The
city has retained its importance as a sea port since ancient times. It
was one of the five cities built by Saluqos Nicator in the 3rd Century
B.C. He named it after his mother, Laudetia.
Not many ancient remains have survived in Al Lathiqiyeh, but there are
four columns and a Roman Arch from the time of Septimius Severus, In
addition to a beautiful, Ottoman construction called "Khan Al-Dukhan",
which is now an important Museum.
